I wake (well rested) and talk to the settlers some more. I agree to Preston’s suggestion that I head to a nearby settlement and help solve raider issues on behalf of the Minutemen. This is, ostensibly, to increase the militia’s reputation and perhaps get new recruits to replace those recently lost. I talk to Sturges and he wants more beds (apparently I should have talked with him the night before so I could complete the quest more realistically than my current thinking which is “yeah, I made them last night, you didn’t notice?”). He then suggests we need more clean water so I construct some water pumps. Then food, but I don’t know what to do about that. There are plenty of beast carcasses in my inventory, but Fallout apparently wants to encourage more sustainable food sources with its settlement/workshop mechanics. There isn’t too much guidance in terms of how to make these improvements to a settlement, or where to find food to plant. The entire workshop process could have more clear explantations given in the game.
I also put up some guard posts, since my defense is apparently inadequate. It seems my walls are merely aesthetic? But perhaps they will have an impact in case of a raid or something. Apparently one person can man multiple guard posts and they still give the same defense bonus. With only a handful of settlers to spare I suppose I can appreciate the mechanic. Defense, as a stat at least, is very by-the-numbers. My efforts to build a wall across the open areas by the river and a blockade of sorts at the main bridge don’t seem to alter the Defense stat in the workshop screen at all. While having three guard posts fulfills the Defense requirement for this population, I get the sense that I could have placed them anywhere, rather than strategically putting them at possible invasion points as I do.
In the afternoon, I head out towards the settlement I agreed to help, but I get derailed walking through Concord again and seeing different parts of the city in full daylight. I enter a church where a few skeletons are in the pews and a pastor seemingly dead at the pulpit. I imagine they went to church when they heard the bombs were falling. The upper story has a safe that is surprisingly difficult to crack. I will return for it later. They’re not using it.
I spot steam down a side street and find an open hole in the ground. Cautiously, I enter and go into some maintenance/sewer tunnels. A human corpse and a brahmin (the cattle of the Fallout world) corpse next to a mirelurk corpse alert me these tunnels are dangerous. I don’t know if I can handle it, so I proceed with caution. I take the tunnel to the right first, and am surprised to encounter mole rats. They are dispatched easily enough, though some get too close for comfort. Winding around, I shoot some radroaches and after these low-level enemies I am almost off-guard when I spot the mirelurk. It moves surprisingly quickly after my sneak attack, and I barely hurt it. A lot of backpedaling and shooting follow and I would have taken a hit had my dog not distracted it enough for me to unload into its back. The rest of the tunnels have some interesting stuff. I exited the same way I entered, but since I have not found any other entrances on the surface I should revisit and take the other two exits.

I am playing with perhaps a silly dedication to realism, trying to eat at least one meal a day and get four hours sleep. The mechanics don’t seem to actually require eating and drinking, though there is a benefit to sleeping on a bed in the form of faster xp gain for awhile. In looking for a bed I stumbled into the Concord Speakeasy. More corpses inside. These, I like to imagine, waited out the end in a different manner than their neighbors in the church. Upstairs I find a minor challenge to that assumption. One skeleton is barricaded in its room with some weapons and a light that is still on. Another skeleton, dressed in a suit, in a different room lies on the bed next to a female mannequin. In the bathroom three male mannequins, two with machetes and one with a plunger surrounding a headless skeleton in a bathtub. The grisly scene is somewhat unnerving. I find the head in the toilet. I try to imagine who would put such a scene together. I also keep a sharp eye on the mannequins even though I know this isn’t that type of game. This is the kind of weirdness I’ve come to expect from a Fallout game though.
I never do find a clean bed that allows the “sleep” action, so I sit on a couch inside one of the ruined buildings in the city center and wait until morning. I received no bonuses for this.
