Fallout Days 8 and 9

In the morning, I consult my map and plot a course for Diamond City. I set off, avoiding Lexington for now, as I want to get to the city and find traders as soon as possible. I skirt around Concord too to save time. The road is clear, so I take it easy.

Soon after Concord I notice a shack off the road. I step forward to investigate and am surprised to find feral ghouls. I don’t have enough ammo for my best guns so I’m not sure about this encounter. Thankfully, my dog holds them off long enough for me to pull out my shotgun and that does the trick.

Fortuitously, this little shack seems to have been a drug operation of some kind. I find some drugs and a working chem station. Checking my options, I see there are some powerful combo drugs I can make. I’m a little wary of getting addicted though, so I’m not sure about using the resources to make them. Then I find I can create something that will purge any addictions I have, which gives me the green light to produce for now. If the worse should happen, I have a way out.
I head to the basement, where I find some more good supplies. Behind a door in the back a named ghoul spins around to attack me. I kill it with three shotgun blasts. A radio is playing. There are clearly signs that this ghoul has been working on something. Did I just kill an intelligent ghoul? I associated him with the feral ghouls upstairs. I feel a little bit guilty. I check the work bench. It seems this ghoul was making some kind of explosive device. The terminal is password protected but once I crack it I find a manifesto that looks to have been written pre-war (but the lore I’ve heard suggests ghouls can live that long). Some anti-government, conspiracy theorist stuff and a declaration he is going to blow up an electrical tower. I feel kind of bad, but it seems he wouldn’t have been reasonable anyway.

From the shack, I continue down the road perhaps a bit too brazenly. I am attacked by some bloatflies and take a fair about of damage. During the fight, a radiation storm creeps up on me. They did a good job making it intimidating with the sudden drop in visibility, the greenish/yellow tint to the air, and the occasional lightning. I dash back towards the shack with a bit of difficulty, mostly using my compass. There, I wait out the storm, which passes soon enough.

I head back on the road and I can see the interchange of multiple highways up ahead. I’m going the right direction. Suddenly, I spot some named figures up ahead that seem to be held up. There is also a Gunner, who I haven’t encountered before. Is that a faction, or someone’s name? He is marked in red but I’m unsure so I approach. Bad idea. They open fire. There are more than one of them. After a prolonged firefight I get the upper hand, though it takes longer than it would have if I had my best weapons. In these opening hours of the game I’m being continually trained that if someone’s name is in red I should preemptively take them out from afar. It’s a paranoid morality the game sets up, but I suppose it reflects the morality of an apocalypse which is to be suspicious of everyone.

After things are safe I look around. I can’t see any of the people I saw earlier. I’m worried they got killed in the fight. I see a shack nearby with some house cats around it. I go that direction and see a trader. Maybe he will have something to tell me. At the very least two of my most important questions about the game have been answered: 1) Where are all the damn traders? and 2) Are there any cats in the world of Fallout? This trader even has a cat picture on his wall.

I speak with the trader, but he doesn’t really have anything interesting to tell me. The characters seem rather flat in terms of dialogue. Of course, he is interesting enough in that he has a bunch of cats with him, and seems to have painted a big picture of a cat for his wall. I get some much-needed trading out of the way then, not seeing the civilians I spotted earlier, head back up to the ruined highway where the gunners came from. I come across some more of them, and die a couple of times. These are much better armed and armored than I anticipated. I haven’t found any ammo for my 10mm, but I find something better—a laser pistol.

Armed with this, I continue onward. I find the remains of some campground and kill a couple of mutated bear creatures called yao guai. There is a motion activated toy monkey with cymbals and glowing eyes that freaks me out a little bit. I leave.

The main route seems to be the highway, but it is crumbled in too many places to travel so I have to find a ground route. I avoid a water plant alongside the river that looks to have supernatants crawling all over it. Coming up under the highway as dark falls, I spot a fire. It is a cooking station. I investigate and spot a trader sitting in a nice cozy hideaway. With all these dangers I’m wondering how she and that strange man with the cats are able to make it as traders out here. I could have easily killed her.

Instead, I change into my fancy suit then head in with my gun put away. I’m here to do some trading, and I make some satisfactory deals. I consider sitting and waiting the night, but it feels like I’m so close, so I put my armor back on and head out.

I spot a town on the outskirts that looks promising. In an open building I find a good selection of ammo. I’m wondering how it isn’t looted this close to a major trade hub. I soon get my answer. Roaming feral ghouls start coming out of the woodwork. I die horribly, reload, and then fair better. It’s still a rough fight. I head up a nearby crane to get high ground. I’m there all night picking them off as they swarm around me. Finally, in the early hours, I’m able to explore. Someone has set up a series of walkways on these rooftops, and I explore every one, though I leave the area that looks like it leads to some sort of dam for later. On one rooftop I find a holotape, Sheila’s holotape. Maybe who built this? I’ll play it later. I make my way through and finish looting the place, including many mutated ferns.

I’m on track for Diamond City as the sun rises.on day 9. I come across some raiders, but compared to what I’ve faced, they are nothing. I’m on the home push, as I was determined to reach Diamond City today. I can’t quite figure out how though. Two more dead raiders later and soon a settler is calling for help. I just know it’s a trap, but I ready myself and follow her into Hardware Town.
I sneak behind some shelving as soon as I get in the door. Soon I hear whispering “I told you to take them into the basement!” “Shh… they’re coming this way, they’ll be here any minute.” “What is taking so long?” “Maybe we should go check it out.” Despite some high level characters (one had a skull marking) I take them down easily. I snuck around while they were talking and have plenty of cover in the position I’ve moved to. With how quickly I take them down, I’m surprised they’ve lasted in this excellent location this long. They have some pretty good loot too. Working my way through, I find a basement entrance where they have piles corpses of traders up, 8 in all (2 women, 4 men, 2 decomposed skeletons) stripped of all belongings and discarded here. Others apparently fell for the trap. I loot what I can and leave. I feel like I’ve at least made the place a little safer.

By 5 pm I have finally reached Diamond City, with some elation. Some reporter, Piper, is at the gate complaining about not being let in. The voice at the other end says the mayor won’t let her in because of some article. I am a bit surprised there are reporters in the wastes. When I approach and talk to her, she uses my presence and a little bluff to get us into the city, explaining the town a bit to me. The mayor and reporter spat, but he is nice to me as a prospective trader or settler. I convince him to point me the right direction, towards a man named Valentine who may help with my missing son. Piper throws accusations about a number of missing persons cases before the mayor wishes me luck and leaves.

When I get in, Piper is talking to Nat, a young newspaper girl. She warns me about missing people, The Institute, grabs. Then she offers a free paper, Publick Occurrences. When I read it, the paper describes a tale of androids or synthetics replacing the population, put there by the Institute. It speculates anyone could be one. It is evening, so most folks are closing up shop. Fortunately, one of the supply vendors is run by a robot who is open 24 hours and has enough good items and caps for me to make a good deal with. Since most of the city is asleep, and I can’t see any signs pointing to an inn or anything, I step into All Faiths Chapel near the gates. Inside, a pastor says it is good to see me and welcomes me to use the chapel anytime of day, for whatever religion I practice as long as I believe in something and as long as it is peaceful. I sit down and wait out the night on one of the comfy pews.
