There’s no well rested bonus for sleeping on a random mattress. You’d think it’d be better than nothing. I’m disappointed that Fallout 4 doesn’t seem to have a mode like Fallout New Vegas had that requires eating, sleeping, and hydration. I think I’d actually do that here. But as far as I’ve researched the survival mode in the Fallout 4 is just about combat difficulty. I need to abort my mission briefly and sell some things/buy some ammo. Back to Goodneighbor. We take the nearby elevator back to the ground level and out.
I stop by the cooking station and cook the meat from the mirelurks and the mirelurk queen on the way out. It’s pretty good stuff, +2 Endurance for an hour. I step outside. It’s raining and now I’m carrying too much. MacReady seems to have disappeared. I try reloading my last couple of saves but can’t find him even though I can hear him in there. I don’t care enough to bother, so I drop a couple of pipe pistols and head back to Goodneighbor via fast travel.
Fast travel works and MacReady is with me again. Time to put on my suit and make some sales. This seems like the right time to try some of the Grape Mentats I made to increase my sales prices and Charisma. I get over 500 caps worth of ammo and 316 caps on top of that after selling all the stuff. I make a similar trade at the next store. Set with ammo, we’re ready to venture forth again on this gloomy day.
As I expected, these Gunners at the Hallucigen place are already dead, likely by my hand in my previous mad rush. Other than a mine I disarm, I meet no resistance outside. Inside, there is some sort of chemical leak, gas everywhere and some gunners I take down. I do a quick inventory, drink one of the refreshing beverages I made to get rid of addictions and radiation poisoning and heal me up. Then I level up while I am at it and take rank 2 of action boy for +50% action point regeneration. The poison doesn’t seem to be affecting me though… yet.
Some drugged water is nearby, and a terminal. The intake procedure listed explains this. Apparently this was some sort of testing procedure and after being offered water and filling out forms the sedative takes effect and the subjects are ready. Ready for what kind of procedure, I’m not sure yet. Instructions for a chemical leak are also there, including the morally questionable decision on whether to lock down labs with test subjects in them or evacuate them. The “do not attempt to reenter” instructions are a bit disconcerting.
As I press forward I hear gunfire. Maybe I’m NOT responsible for the other dead gunners. There are a lot of dead gunners in here, but no sign of what’s attacking them. The next area confirms my suspicions. The gunners are attacking each other. I wonder if this gas is going to affect my companion and I as well. I hack a nearby terminal to get more info. Apparently the facility was used to research riot control gas. The effects were sever aggression and hallucinations, with subjects killing each other or dying of heart failure. The method to cleanse the area involved lethal doses of radiation. Sounds bad (and like they should have had a few more steps before the testing on live subjects phase). I activate a suppressor stun device to see what it will do. It just starts shocking MacReady, so I shut it off. Nearby, I find a nice Tesla Science magazine that improves my energy weapon damage by 5% when I read it.

Around the corner I hear “Who’s there? Come around the side!” I could easily pick the lock on the door, but I decide to humor whoever it is. They sound scared, but not crazy. It’s a gunner conscript. She asks who I am and why I’m here. I convince her I’m a friend and then tell her to get out of here. Maybe it will save her life. Apparently MacReady disliked both of those choices. I consider reloading, but I don’t really care about MacReady that much. I get that he’s got a problem with the Gunners, but that’s no reason to go picking on a lowly conscript who is obviously scared out of her mind. Back when MacReady was a conscript that could have been him, and would he have wanted me to kill him back then?
I accidentally hit a tripwire and barely avoid the grenade that drops. It’s difficult to see traps in all this chemical fog. I find a terminal and activate some protectron units to clear the area. I find a note from an Eric, who is pushing someone to make the quarter’s finances shine. Likely what caused the rushed research and this disaster. I shut down the protectrons after they clear a good area for me.
The next area has more gunners trapped in the containment units fighting each other. I kill them and hack the nearby terminal, which tells me nothing. The observation room terminal just reveals more terrible unethical procedures. Some navigation and jumping over fallen away floors and I’m at an upper office with a master safe (that I can finally unlock) and a terminal that unfortunately doesn’t have much other than a now-ancient meeting schedule.
I continue down to where another gunner is babbling at the foot of the stairs. Other than being seemingly in pain and hallucinating, he isn’t hostile. I briefly consider a mercy killing, but I hold off just in case there is a way to disperse the gas or counteract the effects. More dead bodies and a minigun, but no cure up ahead. I find a mainframe access terminal I can hack and reset the password on all connected terminals. This gets me access further into the facility.
Around the next corridor the gas is even stronger and finally has an impact on my health. I’ll have to find another way around. I finally find a decontamination control terminal. In the last room I face a merc with a stealth boy, but I just hang back and let MacReady take care of him. I hired the guy for a reason. I use the nearby chemical crafting station and look around. I find a note by the Gunner commander, and the initial mission briefing. They were hired to infiltrate and recover this tech and the canisters ruptured, releasing the gas and causing the devastation I’ve seen. I take the un-ruptured canisters, but haven’t decided what to do with them. Too dangerous to just leave here though.
I head to the exit the Gunners seem to have blasted out, stopping to collect some good loot and a fusion core on the way. It’s after midnight, but I feel accomplished. Some trading and a pretty significant salvage mission for one day. Back in Goodneighbor I sell some things in exchange for ammo and other valuables, then return to the hotel. Now to see if Fred Allen can really be trusted with this kind of chemical. Disappointingly, there is no option to question him further or to give him the canister only on condition that he is extremely careful with it. I took a lot of the gas canisters with me, but I think I’ll store some away or break them down for scrap. I only give him one, which is all that’s required for the quest.
Time to buy a room again and bed down for the night.
