It’s the next morning, and a radiation storm STILL rages outside. Tired of posing cutesy waiting scenes, and now thoroughly convinced this is a glitch, I decide the only hope is to just outrun the storm. We’ll visit the rest of General Atomics Galleria some other time when/if it isn’t in the midst of a full-blown radiation storm.
I pop a rad-x and we start running north. I’m not so freaked out that I don’t stop to hunt radstag though. That carry weight bonus is worth a few rads. The storm is still raging as we reach the outer raider guards at Outpost Zimonja, but finally clears halfway through the battle. Seeing blue sky again is a beautiful sight. I level up around the same time. I grill some radstag outside the trailer to celebrate.
The band of level 1 raiders seems like a pushover, until a man in power armor named Boomer comes out with a missile launcher. I die and have to reload three times. Finally, I decide to sneak up the ridge and see if I can get the drop on Boomer before he knows I’m there. I get a lucky first shot on his fusion core, and after I dodge a couple of missiles he seems to explode. Mopping up the rest is no trouble at all.
Outpost Zimonja isn’t very pretty, but it’s got a certain utilitarian flare to it, and it comes with a set of power armor, it would seem. It also comes with a copy of Astoundingly Awesome Tales, “Deep Sea Terror: Sinister Seafood Strikes” which gives me +5% damage at night.
I find Boomer’s body some distance away from his armor, and it seems I was being shot at with mini-nukes from a Fat Man instead of missiles. No wonder I died so many times.
I’m a bit confused as to why the game considers taking this power armor to be stealing, when it hasn’t been an issue before. If I wasn’t supposed to kill Boomer, why was he associating with raiders and shooting missiles at me? I wonder if it has something to do with me sniping the fusion core. Regardless, I’m not really concerned with some raider power armor at the moment. What I have is much better.

Since I lack the ceramics needed to build a recruitment beacon and complete the mission, I decide to head back towards General Atomics Galleria for now. Maybe the storm will be gone by now, and maybe they will have some to sell there.
It’s blue skies all the way back and just about noon when I reach the galleria. Yet, as soon as I set foot there, the sky starts to darken. By the time I reach the first store, a radiation storm is once again starting to rage. This is a very strange glitch, and I can’t seem to find any others who have had it when I search online. I guess I’ll be shopping in power armor today, but I don’t really need the caps all that much. Reg at the department store doesn’t have much, but I buy a source of ceramics from him.
As I move towards the bakery, the storm finally converts from a radiation storm to a normal rainstorm. Crisp here is a bit less friendly than the other bots and doesn’t sell much of value. Torte, in the kitchen, isn’t very friendly either. The cafe across from the bakery is empty, and I think I likely killed its robot steward when it attacked me before I reset the galleria.
In Madden’s boxing gym, I’m informed by Mack that the instructor is a little under the weather, and then that it looks like he’s out for the count. I loot some flamer fuel and circuitry off of him and move on. The gym’s got a good stock of chems on the shelf, or as Danny, the bot who sells more calls them “supplements.” There’s some stimpaks and cash in a safe behind the locked door. Hacking the terminal, I initiate a manager’s sale to get 20% off so I can purchase some med-x and other chems.
At the General Atomics outlet, I find a scavenger just standing there. Unlike some of the others, he seems nice enough, although he doesn’t talk or do much. Still, this interaction with a friendly (or at least pacified) scavenger is worthy of note and does some work towards altering my perception of them. He just notes that there’s good salvage to be had in scrapped robots.
I close my tour of the galleria with Handy Eats, another diner than doesn’t really have much to recommend it. Overall, what started as an interesting location with lots of settlement potential (imagine running a trading post here) is ultimately a huge disappointment. Bethesda could have used this opportunity to let the player cultivate a trading post of sorts that goes beyond the typical settlement and attempt to revive some aspect of the old world. Instead, it’s merely a somewhat amusing brief experience without much incentive to return. It’s almost 6pm when I head back towards Outpost Zimonja. I set up the recruitment beacon and, with a bit of daylight left, decide we should fast travel back to Sanctuary.
It’s 10pm when we arrive in Sanctuary Hills, and I immediately set about repairing both sets of power armor. I’ll be going to take back Fort Independence soon, so I spend two perk points this time, one for another rank of armorer, and one for another rank of science. I want to improve this armor as best I can. I start with a VATS Matrix Overlay in the helmet, given how much I use VATS, to increase my hit chance. I don’t have enough ceramic to upgrade all the armor to the Model C yet, but at least I have an upgraded helmet. I also winterize all the armor but the torso, which I put a prism coating on, all of which heavily upgrades my energy resistance. Satisfied with my work, but wishing I had more ceramic and aluminum to complete the upgrades, I head to my nearby bedroom for the night.
