Preston and I head out into the morning darkness, skirting around the now probably very angry scavengers. Before leaving the area, I slip into a house labeled Drug Den. There’s a strange sound I can’t place, maybe an insect but not quite how I remember them sounding, followed by footsteps.
Soon, a raider comes down the stairs and we exchange fire. Of course, the one upstairs thinks he’s just hearing things after awhile for some reason despite the many shots fired before the dead raider rolled downstairs.
Of course, they ARE on drugs so maybe that explains it. I move up to the second floor and take the next one out on yet another set of stairs. There are some decent chems and a bottle cap mine, but nothing much of note. I leave and dart quietly along the buildings by the waterfront towards my destination, passing some more interesting signage.
As we round the corner near our destination, the sun is already over the horizon. Perhaps we should have left earlier. There’s a legendary raider so I pull out my sniper rifle and get a huge hit up front that unfortunately heals instantly because that’s what legendary enemies do from time to time. It turns into a firefight, but with Preston covering me I go on the move for a better position behind some cars and take out the group of raiders. The legendary is firing at me with some strange gun that ripples the air and does damage with radiation poisoning. Turns out to be an Enraging Gamma Gun, which in addition to the radiation damage causes the target to frenzy on a critical hit. It’s only 3 pounds so I may yet add it to my arsenal.
I take a radaway for the radiation poisoning, then eat a squirrel on a stick I found in a nearby cooler to recover some health before moving on. Considering my options, I decide to try sneaking around the waterfront before trying the front door.
There’s no entrance back there, so I go back around front. Thankfully there are no more raiders around, or else they would be alerted by my encounter with a deathclaw that charges me as I round the building. Fortunately, I retreat up some stairs and put a railing in between me and it, taking a significant chunk out of it before it figures out how to get up. Even when it does, Preston holds the line and it starts to retreat before I put it down.
There are no immediate signs of life or recent habitation in the BADTFL Regional Office, but maybe the raiders are just bad at housekeeping and trap setting. In the next room, however, there’s a laser spotlight and a laser turret. I suppose the front room is just, well, a front. Instead of walking into this obvious trap, I take the unassuming doors downstairs into a basement area.
The basement is by no means easy going, however. I exchange fire with two raiders and a named raider called Sparta down here as they dart around the filing cabinets that line the room.

This theft undoubtedly contributed to the problem in 2006, when over 1 million of Xbox consoles were cialis canada generic stolen from a lorry near Hillards Cross.
When I get some breathing room, I dart to the nearby terminal hoping Preston will cover me and with an amazingly quick hack set a protectron loose. It heads upstairs to the other room, which I hope will give enough distraction for me to sneak around from another route.
This downstairs route takes me directly to an old jail cell where they’re keeping the woman who has been kidnapped. I dart forward and make myself a target to keep her from being shot and take out the two guards in the room. While I wait to make sure the coast is clear, I pick up and play the Eddie Winter holotape 0 nearby. It’s dictated to some sort of Russian assassin and closes with “your secret is safe with me.” At the moment, there’s not really a story here.
I unlock the cell and talk with the woman briefly before setting her free. I’m wondering if this escort mission will need to be the whole way back to the settlement. In the front room, I see the police protectron has fallen, which means there could still be raiders here. I’ll have to return after this to finish them off. Again, there’s probably no reason for this, but it would be fantastic if the game took such things into account and had survivors go looking for revenge if you let them escape.
I exit and save before testing out fast travel. When I arrive, the mission completes, but the woman is nowhere to be found. I suppose some wouldn’t care as long as they get their reward, but this bothers me, so I reload. I decide to try to lead her back the indirect route, only to lose her quickly. Apparently she won’t just follow me anywhere. She also doesn’t go on her own very quickly, so I have to slowly walk constantly looking back at her to see if I’m going somewhere she’ll follow. It’s a bit infuriating. Finally, she does take the lead and appears to know where she’s going.
It’s mid-afternoon by the time we get to County Crossing. I could already have made this distance and back. Still, I stick with it. Or, more honestly, I do other things on my computer while my character just stands there until she’s almost out of sight, then run catch up with her in a second. Soon, I realize her pathing is, of course, buggy. Instead of taking the direct route, she keeps going along the waterfront, going off-road. She stops and stands in the water for a few moments before continuing. We pass an interesting shack in which I hear some moaning, so I stop and pick the lock, killing the ghoul within and looting it (though not taking the time to use the weapons bench inside. Then I rejoin her.
As we come up from the waterfront near the old satellite array, she is beset by a wild mongrel. I get between them and put it down. Up near the fence leading to the array, a Brotherhood of Steel chopper drops down and their troops jump out, running down the road the way we’re headed. An attack dog is on their tail trying to get one of them, so I shoot it. No idea where it came from. Then I pull out my sniper rifle and kill one of the supermutants who apparently have retaken the array. I hear more gunfire and the sound of the chopper circling around, and soon there are a series of explosions up on the highway above. If I had to guess, I’d say there are probably Gunners or something up there and the Brotherhood are trying to retake the highway.
Soon, we find the remains of the chopper down a side street. It seems the Brotherhood lost this fight. That’s the second chopper crash I’ve seen, and I imagine they don’t just grow on trees. I’m wondering how they support such recklessness.
As the sun sets, we are nearing our goal. For a moment, in the rosy glow of sunset, I’m actually glad that I accompanied her the whole way. Sure, it was infuriatingly slow, but I saw some interesting things I wouldn’t have had I fast traveled.
Then, in a moment of pure insanity, she decides that the best way to get home is to take an only slight shortcut THROUGH the arena where raiders are racing killer robots! I reload multiple times try staying back, try following, try getting in her way, but this is what she does EVERY SINGLE TIME. This is how they pathed her character.
Fortunately, she appears to be immortal. I finally adopt a hang back and see policy and eventually after several firefights she emerges on the other side unscathed. The whole thing just kills any pretense of realism. Even once she is on the other side, I watch incredulous as she detects enemies and then starts shooting at them. One time, she comes and hides over by the bridge that will take her home, then actually goes BACK to engage the raiders in another shootout.
We finally return about 10 pm, and at least she thanks me for getting her home safe, which is added onto the mission completion conversation I tried earlier after fast traveling. They’re going to join the Minutemen as another settlement. I get an indication afterwards saying Preston wants to talk to me, but I’m pleasantly surprised when I just get experience points and he doesn’t ask me to help anyone else immediately. I call it a night and sleep in the folks bed. It’s the least they can do.
