Day 6
I make my way back to the settlement. It is a rainy day, and I stop off again at the drive-in theater. I realize I haven’t fully looted the place, so I take more time and do it right. Of course, there’s still an expert safe I can’t get to.

Afterwards, I reach the settlement in afternoon. The rain has stopped and the sun is just peeking through the clouds when I tell them the raiders have been taken care of. They’ve been talking it over and will join the minutemen. It feels good enough, although they’re still not well characterized in terms of conversation. They’re one of my settlements now, and I start out by arming them with some of the many spare weapons I’m carrying, then building them a guard post.

Instead of returning through Concord, I decide to head back cross-country towards the Red Rocket Truck Stop outside Sanctuary. On the way I come across a military listening station of some kind. Minimal bandit presence on the outside, so I take them out quickly. The inside is another matter entirely. I disarm a laser trigger and go in, read some logs on a nearby terminal, and think the place is abandoned until I almost walk right into a raider.

I equip myself with what few weapons I actually have ammo for still and take the fight to them, clearing one section at a time and being careful. I have just enough to take everyone down before they can do too much damage to me. There’s some good loot down here, and my first legendary enemy, a gigantic cockroach! It doesn’t give me as much trouble as I was afraid it would, but I am now out of machine gun ammo.

When I leave, it is already night. As I move through the woods I see strange glows here and there and investigate. It seems there are glowing fungi in the forest. I actually find it quite beautiful. Up ahead there is a different glow—a campfire. My dog alerts me enemies are near. Raiders—though I don’t see how I would know that. They could be travelers like me, or a caravan. In a way the labeling of everything when you hover the cursor over it (or use VATS) takes away some of the suspense and moral quandaries that could occur if the game remained more ambiguous. Perhaps this reflects my knowledge? But having just woken up after 200 years I’m not sure I’d have the knowledge to 100% tell a raider from a caravan member.

I would ambush them before they get up, but I’m out of ammo for my good long range guns. I move in with my shotgun. A tense firefight ensues through the trees. I need to get close to do damage, but two shots aren’t enough and I have to dodge back behind trees to avoid getting shot too much. When my dog distracts them I can sneak around and brutally finish them with the butt of my shotgun. I am at the top of the hill now. I know across this water lies Sanctuary, but I dare not risk the swim so I keep heading towards the truck stop.

On the way, I find a corpse propped up against some strange vacuum sealed pipe. I pick up a new gun and a Vault-Tec lab coat from the corpse. Nearby is a crate with some supplies for dealing with radiation, and some purified water. I wonder who this person was, and what brought them out here. Whatever, they were clearly prepared. Perhaps they were from my vault, gone scouting to see if it was safe?

I head into Sanctuary now, and meet the old woman near the gate. She says she will give me another reading if I get her some jet. I have plenty, having spent all my ammunition on raiders, but taken from them lots of drugs. She tells me, once more, to go to Diamond City, but adds that I should follow the signs for the bright light, the heart. I’m not sure if this is a place, a thing, or metaphorically a person, but it gives me something.

I speak with Preston well into the night. He wants to make me leader of the new Minutemen, a general. I question why he doesn’t want the job, but ultimately agree. It is 4 am when I lay down in bed.
