I wake up ready to sell some gear and then take Independence. I’ll be parting ways with Piper after 22 in-game days together. I’m going to miss her, as I’ll be headed out with Preston (who I don’t like as much as a companion) for this mission. Of course, Piper had been talking about spending more time with her sister, so she’ll be able to do that while I take care of other business for awhile. It’s odd, but I often form preferences for or against companions in these games based more on what they say and how likable they are than their skills in the game. Piper’s been pretty solid all around, and her sarcasm is funny, while Preston, despite his admirable character traits, says a lot of things that annoy me more. This is also my last morning for awhile to have the Lover’s Embrace perk, and I’ll likely be wasting the xp bonus as I have to take care of some things before heading out.
I talk to Preston, who thanks me for establishing the settlement at Outpost Zimonja and then proceeds to give me some more quests. These will go on the back burner for awhile. I would feel more urgency in helping these settlements out, but some of the past Minutemen quests have not been compelling at all and it has soured them for me in general.
I take all my gear back from Piper, but leave her a submachine gun and 200 rounds for it so she can make her way back to Diamond City safely. Then, I do some serious trading (but decide to pop some grape mentats for a little added bonus). I’m continually disappointed in my stores. Only this blonde settler, who I’m just going to call Mjoll (after the Skyrim character) since she doesn’t have a name, regularly shows up for work and tends her stall. Occasionally, Jun Long makes his way over to his stall, but other times he just stands stupidly in the street (where thankfully I can still trade with him). The vault tec rep I feel is really shirking his duty as I hardly ever see him at his stall. And after I went through the trouble to build a stall just for him! Thank goodness my accidental glitch trapping Trashcan Carla in my settlement still holds.
I can’t find Dogmeat at his doghouse and want to give him his new collar. While looking around, I find a root cellar behind one of the houses that I must have missed before. The place had some pretty decent loot for the taking (including some gold bars that are probably worth a bit). Even 70 hours in, I still find surprises in my own backyard. As a bonus, I find enough extra material to spruce up my power armor with calibrated shocks on one leg to up my carry weight capacity and kinetic servos on the other to increase my action point regeneration while moving. That carry weight boost is nothing to sneeze at either, giving a full 50 lbs extra with just one leg improvement. I look all over for Dogmeat, stopping to cook some meals at the cooking station (I should use more special meals that increase perception, damage reduction, and the like assuming that one hour means one real-time hour).

Finally, I find Dogmeat behind a house closer to the gate that I didn’t even know had a doghouse out back. I guess he wanted to move closer to the action. I give him his new dog collar, which goes pretty well with his doggles and dog armor.
It’s mid-afternoon by the time I find Dogmeat, and once I’m done with all my trading I decide I have so many caps left over I should spruce up the place a bit. So I upgrade the current stores and add new ones until I’m only missing a clinic. Then I add some more lamps to make the place look nice, and by the time I track down everyone to assign workers to the stores it’s dark. Looks like I’ll be spending another night here after all.
The new establishments seem to be drawing the settlers, surprisingly. I was pleased to see a lot of the folks from around town gathered around the new bar until after midnight (though whether that was scripted or coincidence I don’t know). Time to suit up and join the party before bed.
